Hematoma After an Accident

Violent crashes often lead to serious external and internal trauma. One of the most common injuries people experience following an auto accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident, or a slip and fall is bruising.

Bruising, or hematomas, can happen anywhere on the body. The sudden impact of a collisions can cause bruising to the skin, muscles, organs, breasts, bones, and even the brain. While most bruises will diminish after a few weeks, there are others that take months to fade away.

The bruising of internal organs in the abdomen, such as the liver, spleen, and stomach can be incredibly dangerous and can lead to lifelong complications.

Symptoms of Internal Bruising

  • Pain and Tenderness
  • Bruising Under the Skin
  • Limited Range of Motion in the Joints
  • Blood Pooling Around Injury Site
  • Blood in Urine

Treatment for internal bruising varies, but often includes a hospital stay, bedrest, medication, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and even surgery.

It is important to note that in many cases, symptoms of internal bleeding may not present right away. That is why it is critical to be examined by a medical professional immediately following any accident that has jolted your body. Soft tissue trauma and bad bruises after a car crash can be just as serious as open wounds.  Left untreated, your health situation could become much, much worse.

Lacerations After an Accident

Lacerations are deep cuts, gashes, or tears within the skin that often leave accident victims with unsightly and debilitating scars. Even worse, these types of injuries can cause pain, long-term disability, and in rare cases, death.

If you or a loved one has suffered from severe cuts or lacerations after a motor vehicle accident, and it was due to someone else’s carelessness or negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Types of Cuts and Lacerations

  • Cut Lacerations – This is the most common type of cut and happens when something sharp comes into contact with the skin and breaks through the first few layers. It typically requires a bandage or stitches.
  • Over-Stretching – This is rare but happens when an object hits the skin and pulls the skin, resulting in cracks or tears. It is very painful and requires stitches and, at times, surgery. Scarring can be very severe with this type of injury.
  • Grinding Compression- This type of injury happens when something comes into contact with the victim’s skin. In this case, the object brushes and peels away the skin, leaving tissue exposed. Auto accidents and heavy machine accidents are often to blame for these injuries.
  • Split Lacerations – This type of laceration happens when two objects crush the victim’s body, tearing the skin apart.

When an accident happens on the road, broken glass, metal, plastic, and all types of objects can go flying, puncturing the skin of the driver, the passenger, or a pedestrian nearby. While some of these lacerations will heal on their own, the deeper cuts could result in serious blood loss.

The scars from these accidents are often debilitating and leave the victim feeling insecure and depressed. When an accident leaves you with severe lacerations, you may be able to recover damages from the driver that was at fault. This includes past, present or future medical bills, along with:

  • Lost Wages
  • Plastic Surgery to Avoid Scarring
  • Loss of Ability to Work (Permanent Disability)
  • Pain and Suffering
